The Athena Network host a weekly Twitter Hour on Monday’s from 8-9pm. To get involved with the chat you are able to follow by using the hashtag #Athenabizhour.

Each week will feature an expert in their field. They will be available to answer your questions around their profession, and to offer fabulous advice and tips, that you can transfer to your own businesses.

It is also a great opportunity to connect with fellow members, Regional Directors and visitors from around the UK and beyond.

This week we were joined by Delia Zanatta ‘The Flexible Working Expert’ for the evening. Here is a summary from Delia’s #AthenaBizHour;


Top Tip #1 – Employers: flexibility is THE top motivator at work. Motivated employees = more loyal, more committed, healthier

Top Tip #2 – People: be clear what you want to ‘blend’ in your life (work, family) so you can create the right blend for you.

What are the usual blends you are presented with?

Peoples’ blends are different – life, family, charity work, health, etc. Work out what’s important to you!

Top Tip #3 – Employers: people at ALL stages of their career value flexibility. Get the brains you need – be flexible!

For me being flexible means I am growing in direction didn’t expect but works better – @SoniaYoutrition

Top Tip #4 – People: be clear what level/type of flexibility you really need vs where you could compromise for the right role

#5 Employers: does a role REALLY need to be inflexible? Could it have some flexibility? Be clear in your job ad!

Top Tip #6 – People: be disciplined & define a boundary between ‘working’ & ‘not working’ so you aren’t “always on”!

Top Tip #7 – Employers: create a rhythm to the working week to keep flexible staff on track and engaged.

Top Tip #8 – People: take time to build relationships & understand the rhythm of the business. Manage your time to add value

Top Tip #9 – Employers: trust your flexible staff to get the job done & judge on quality & timeliness… not hours at the desk

Top Tip #10 – People: life is a marathon, not a sprint. Taking care of your wellbeing is essential to get there in one piece!

Contract work should be a specific (generally shorter term) duration of contract
